Max/MSP/Jitter is an extremely powerful and flexible toolkit for visual artists - but it can often seem daunting to get to grips with. In this course Sean Clark will be showing how Max/MSP/Jitter can be used to create customised video mixing and playback systems, how it can be used to control lighting and how it work with sensors an actuators. The course is intended for those who are fairly new to Max/MSP (and certainly Jitter), but it is suggested that you try to familiar yourselves with some of the basic concepts behind the software before the course starts. Attendees should bring a laptop (Mac or PC) with the latest Max/MSP and Jitter software installed on it (the free one month trial will be sufficient). There will be a short amount of time at the beginning of course to make sure that all student laptops are configured correctly. The lastest Max/MSP Jitter software can be downloaded from www.cycling74.com. During the course we will focus on Max/MSP/Jitter basics, followed by the creation of a simple video mixer, the processing of live video, then using MIDI controllers and DMX lighting and finally using the Arduino micro-controller. Whilst this *will* be a technical day, the ultimate goal of the training is to show artists how they can use the Max/MSP/Jitter to create interactive and responsive visual artworks. Sean Clark will be demonstrating examples of such work from his own practice and there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion about the creative aspects of working with interactive media.
