East Midlands Cultural Showcase Event
Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)
A commission from the East Midlands Development Agency and Arts Council England in association with BMI Baby airlines. A range of artists from professional dancers to bhangra drum ensembles and musicians who use the latest state-of-the art technology to create electronic sound tracks were flown to Barcelona to demonstrate the creativity that thrives in the East Midlands.
Bathysphere’s contribution was to compose and perform ‘electronic cocktail’ music with synchronised visual work. Steve Gibbs, Chris Cousin and Stu Smith used three laptop computers to play and manipulate digital sound and images. This music was composed specifically to complement the nature of the museum building and the evening programme. The Bathysphere team also oversaw the collation and preparation of artists’ work in the run up to the event and provided technical coordination for its display on the evening.
The event was held in Barcelona’s incredible Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) on the evening of May 11th 2004. An invited audience of Catalonian dignitaries saw work from Bathysphere, Metro-Boulot-Dodo, Dhol Enforcement Agency, Leicester Caribbean Carnival and a host of other artists from the region.
