Phoenix Arts, Leicester
Bathysphere curate their second electronic music microfestival at the Phoenix Arts in Leicester with live performances from The Dead Texan & The Buoys plus an installation from composer and sound artist Peter Batchelor.
Headlining in the main auditorium is the breathtaking cinematic soundscape of The Dead Texan - the collaborative project of Belgium's Adam Wiltzie (Windsor for the Derby / Stars of the Lid) and independent filmmaker Christina Vantzos. Strings, Piano and layers of guitar make up the minimal tapestry of this sublime live act, taking the listener through vast, empty landscapes and periods of deep introspection. Christina’s visuals mix animation with video footage, adding a hypnotic dimension to the enchanting ambient score.
The Buoys are Chris Cousin, Steve Gibbs and Stuart Smith, probably best known for running Bathysphere. For this, their first ever live performance, the creative trio will be investigating digital deep-water as they mould sound and visuals into a lo_tempo widescreen meltdown. The Buoys' music brings together lush laptop trickery, lo-fi instrumentation and panoramic moving image into an experience that is truly Bathyspheric.
The installation ‘Studies on Canvas’ from composer and sound artist Peter Batchelor will be on display in the café. The piece explores the notion of audio images using a 6 x 5 grid of flat-panel loudspeakers under a blank canvas. Field recordings including beaches, caverns, bubbles and driftwood allow the listener to imagine the visual representation of each sound. Peter has received recognition for his multi-channel compositions including the Concours de musique electroacoustique de Bourges and the International ElectroAcoustic Music Contest of São Paulo.
Cutting edge audio courtesy of Bathysphere’s lo-tempo dj’s will prevail in the Phoenix bar, followed by a special after party at The Attik in Leicester’s city centre. featuring Electronic artists SofaLofa, Eddie23, Steve Morgan and Brian Rocket. Just produce your ticket at the door and dance until the early hours for free.
