Artist and Technologist
Sean Clark's broad interests are in the creative uses of digital technology. In his commercial work he is interested in social networking, mobile multimedia, Web 2.0, collaborative computing and location-aware information systems. In his arts work he is interested in systems theory, autopoiesis, emergence and representations of flow and connectedness.
After graduating from Loughborough University in 1988, Sean worked as a research associate at Loughborough and Derby Universities. During this time he published extensively in the research press. His fields of interest were 'Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)' and the understanding of drawing and sketching behaviour. He also began to develop a strong interest in digital arts.
He was an active participant in the Internet revolution of the 1990s and was involved in writing for, and editing, a number of newsstand Internet magazines, including NetUser, Internet Today and Total Internet.
Sean helped establish an early commercial web business in 1995 and then his own web company Cuttlefish.Com in 2001. In 2005 Cuttlefish.Com became Cuttlefish Multimedia Ltd (www.cuttlefish.com) and was joined by arts/technology organisation Cuttlefish Digital Arts (www.cuttlefish.org).
In parrallel with his commercial work, Sean has developed a successful practice as a digital artist and has maintained an active interest in research. His digital arts activities have led him to work nationally and internationally on live performances and gallery installations. He has been successful in obtaining residency and commission funding and has developed his own style of interactive artwork.
Sean holds an honours degree in Computer Studies from Loughborough University and a masters degree in Digital Arts from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London.
He has had a varied career which has seen him work in academia, commerce and the arts, and he is comfortably able to move his focus between the three.
